August 2007: Token News

The annual token get-together is now over and I think it turned out great. We met at the Bannock County Historical Museum Friday afternoon July 27th. Several token displays were set up which I really enjoyed. Richard Hansen gave a talk about trade tokens and he did a good job!

We had to be out of the museum by 6:00 P.M. so we headed for Senior Iguanas for a nice Mexican meal. During dinner Greg handed out some neat encased Idaho quarters to commemorate our get-together. After dinner we drove to Richard Hansen’s house and spent the rest of the evening trading tokens and visiting. I finished a trade for a round, brass token from "The Blazing Rag / Saloon / Gilmore, Ida. // Good For / One / Drink" which made me very happy. I’ve been trying to find one from this business for many years. Saturday morning we met for breakfast and then started our walking tour of the old downtown area. A list was handed out which showed the location of the token producing businesses. It also showed the address of the businesses and the date they were at various locations. After the walking tour we headed out in a van for our driving tour. We drove through Declo and on to Albion where we toured the museum. After lunch in Albion we headed for Almo where we took a short break. We then drove through the City of Rocks and ended up in Oakley. We stopped at the Oakley Museum for a while and then did a quick side trip to the Oakley cemetery to look for a relative of Greg. Buy this time it was getting late so we headed back to Pocatello for dinner. After a nice dinner at the old brewery we met again at Richard’s to finish up some trades and continue the bull session. Sunday morning we all headed home. I think a few of the guys were going to try and find a place to metal detect on Sunday but I’m not sure if they went or not. We decided to meet next year in Nampa and take a tour of the Silver City, Idaho area which a lot of us haven’t been to before. I think everyone had a great time and I know I’m already looking forward to next year. Thanks to everyone who helped make our 11th annual get-together a success!!

A few good tokens showed up on e-bay this month. The best one that I saw was a "J.M. Jeannot, Hope, Idaho" 25c, round, aluminum token which sold for $191.49. An "M.D. Harris, St. Joe, Idaho" sold for $135.83 and a Carter & Halter token from Van Wyck, Idaho went for $68.00. A neat brass, cloverleaf Chris VanStratt maverick from Salmon sold for $58.00 and a round, aluminum Boise token from The Up To Date sold for $55.00.

There has been a tentative attribution to the S.C.C. maverick token dug in Soldier. It apparently stands for the Solder Commercial Club.

I saw two tokens at our get-together that I think are new listings. One was a round, aluminum, 5c token that said "Sam Spera / Nez Perce, Idaho." The other was a round, brass, 5c token from "Hathaway Bros. / Chester, Ida."
