First Idaho Get Together road trip to Placerville in 1998

Mike Fritz would like everyone to e-mail me with you choice of dates for our next Get Together. Late June is the tentative time frame but Mikes afraid we might get rained on if we go metal detecting.

Dale won a previously unknown Samaria token on ebay. It was from Richards & Martin/ Samaria, Idaho and was octagonal, aluminum, 25mm. A 10c denomination. I found the business listed from 1920-31 as cigars & billiards in my D/B directories. He was also able to get a previously unknown token from the Elk River Drug Co./ Elk River, Idaho. It is also octagonal, aluminum, 24mm.

Several others were able to pick up some of the Riverside Mercantile tokens from American Falls that were sold on ebay. I think there were three denominations that were sold. There were a lot of other neat Idaho tokens that seemed to go for a fairly reasonable price on ebay. If you find other tokens that you would like me to mention let me know.

G-Man, Richard H., Dale and I tried to gang up at an estate auction held in Shelley. There was a nice $1.00 Bainbridge & Schroder/ Twin Falls, Ida. token that was for sale. It went higher than any of us were willing to pay ($160.00), so we all left and drove to Blackfoot for a consolation lunch.

G-Man had me attribute a Robert Dearden maverick token for him. It’s an old style token and came with some others from around the 1892 time period. I found Robert Deardon first in Aetna then Bayhorse in the 1880's and running a saloon in Clayton in 1892. So we have tentatively attributed it to Clayton. It is round, white metal or nickel, app. 28mm and says I.O.U./ One/ Drink on the reverse.

The other maverick that Dale and I were able to attribute says The Star Recreation Parlor/ F.A.//gf/ 5c/ i.t.; round, brass, 21mm. We found a newspaper advertisement that John had copied in his article on the Star Recreation/ Burley, Idaho that said, "The Star Recreation Parlor/ Frank Arima" so we attributed the maverick to Burley.

Bill Gleixer found a token in Boise that is from Dirty Harry’s. I couldn’t tell from his e-mail if it is a modern token or not and whether it’s a maverick or not? I’ll have to clarify those things with him.

G-Mans best recent find was the Coney Island/ Coeur D’ Alene, Idaho token he got on ebay. He says there’s a direct connection with the Coney Island in New York. Apparently the man who built Coney Island in New York later moved to Spokane, Washington and made a theme park there similar to the Coney Island in New York which resulted in a number of businesses in the Spokane area using the Coney Island name.
