January 2005: Token News

Mike, G-Man and Dale at 2004 gathering in Soda Springs. John cataloging tokens at 2004 gathering.

As far as I can find out our next get-together is going to be in Rathdrum, Idaho in either June or July. I think we elected Mike Fritz to be in charge this year and if I find out any more info I'll pass it on next month. At the top of this page are a couple of pictures from past gatherings.

Speaking of pictures, the photo of the Heise, Idaho token at the top of my home web page is part of Mrs. Gold's "widow's mite" as she calls it, that she kept when she sold John's collection. The picture of the Shelby token at the top of the "pictures" page is also from her remaining tokens which she let me photograph last month. I'll share a few other pictures in the future. She only has about 6 or 7 tokens left and plans on giving them to her sons, so they are not for sale!

A lot of us are actively out there tracking down tokens and adding new finds to our collections. Dan Lute added a new town to the Idaho town list a few months ago. He turned up a Star/Saloon/Rogers & Co./Pine, Ida.//gf/one/drink; scalloped, aluminum. The old town site of Pine is now underneath a reservoir so it may be tough to find another. It's a great looking token and made me jealous. Dale Austin has come up with some pretty amazing finds over the past few months. I will picture some of them eventually on the picture page.

We worked together on a couple of the deals so I ended up with a few great tokens also. He got two Office/Saloon/Hope, Idaho.//gf/61/4c/i.t.; rd, br, 21mm. When Richard Magnuson hasn't seen or heard of a Wallace token before, you know it's a keeper! Dale also recently came up with a Harry Neff/  Ririe, Idaho; rd, aluminum, 30mm token. It is worn on the reverse so it's hard to tell the original denomination but it has an "O" and a "25" C/S on both the obverse and reverse.

Speaking of saloon tokens, several have shown up recently on ebay and seem to be going for record high prices. I bid on a couple but they both eventually ended up going out of state. The "Hermann's Saloon/Wardner, Idaho" token was I think the first one of those to show up and sold for $474.00 The "Red Top Saloon/Emmett, Idaho" token also is a rare Idaho saloon token and sold for $536.00 Even fairly common Idaho tokens seem to be slowly creeping up in price, I paid an insane price for the J.H. Dauer, Moscow, Idaho token but I gave it to myself for Christmas so I was partly able to rationalize the price. Besides it's a neat, old, incused, uniface token and each of the 3 known are different denominations.

Several new mavericks were attributed to Idaho in the past few months. 1. J.T. Holcomb/gf/5c/i.t.; rd, brass, uniface, incused. It was dug in Pocatello and I found him listed as a saloon in Pocatello in 1892. G-Man ended up with the token. Since I'm running out of space, I'll have to tell you about the other new mavericks next month.

To ended up this month, here's a neat quote that I found in the Oct 4, 1893 "Idaho Recorder" from Salmon Idaho: " The Bijou Saloon, Larry Wills-Prop., Johnnie Gee-Mixologist, where you can Smile twice for 2-bits."
