May 2007: Token News

As I mentioned last month I will try and update this web page monthly. At present there is no new information to report about our annual token meeting. I’m sure Greg will email most of us as soon as a specific date is decided on. I’ll post the date on this page as soon as I know it so hopefully everyone who is interested in attending will know about it.

I added Jake Graham from Boise to the contacts page so any of you can contact him if necessary.

For the next couple of months I’m going to picture the obverse and reverse of some of the tokens I have pictured on the sides of this page so you can see what their reverses look like.

I appreciate the support and comments I’ve received from some of you about this site. It helps to know that the information I provide is actually being read.

The weather has improved so there should be some more good finds by those of us who metal detect. I did receive word that a "Malta Tavern, Malta, Idaho" token was dug in that area by Greg Olson from Pocatello. That’s the third one of those that I know of. I have a rubbing of an un-dug example of this token but I don’t have the token.

There were quite a few good Idaho tokens on e-bay this past month. The only good one I picked up was from "The Stockholm Bar, Sandpoint, Idaho." A "W.C. Davis//BB" token attributed to Rathdrum sold for $60.00. A damaged "Frank J. Reed / Kamiah, Idaho" failed to meet it’s $250.00 reserve. It’s still available for that price at Hollis Pincock’s E-Bay store. A great early "Hotel/Saloon/Weiser" token also failed to meet it’s reserve. It was bid up to $356.00 but that wasn’t enough. I’m not sure if someone found out what the reserve was and purchased it or not.

One of the best items this month was a group of tokens that had 3 rare Hope, Idaho tokens in it. The Hope, Idaho tokens were all the same and were issued by J.M. Jeannot. The tokens were round, aluminum and good for 5c in trade. I hadn’t seen any tokens from this merchant before. I found him listed in 1908 operating a saloon. The group sold for $765.00. Bill Gleixner was the lucky winner and I hope he saves me one of the extras!!! Bill is working in Nevada for a few years but can be reached by email. There was a neat large, round, aluminum token from the "Idaho Cigar Store, Couer D’Alene, Idaho" which sold for $78.78. It was an unusual $1.00 variety from this business. There were a couple of tokens that sold for less than I thought they would. The "Meridian Commissary" at $36.00 was a bargain and the "Commercial Club Cigar/Twin Falls" at $17.50 was a good buy. There were about 10 other Idaho tokens that I followed that I felt sold in a reasonable range. Of course, this is just my opinion and I’m sure others may disagree.

The NW Tams token show is in Vancouver, Washington on the weekend of July 7th & 8th. It is always a good show and a few Idaho collectors usually show up. The annual NTCA show is going to be in Omaha, Nebraska again this year over Labor Day weekend.
