October 2007: Token News

Dale Austin and Roy Rubick drove over to the NTCA national token show that was held in Omaha over the Labor Day weekend. They both found some neat tokens that they were able to add to their collections. Dale found a Bartlett Bros. maverick token that may be from St. Anthony, Idaho. I know there was a Bartlett Bros saloon in St. Anthony and in Union, Idaho around 1901. Union was a small town which only lasted for a few years and then everyone moved over and established Thornton, Idaho which is just a few miles south of Rexburg. Around 1905 the Bartlett Bros joined with Fred Murphy and formed a saloon business called Murphy & Bartlett in St. Anthony, Idaho. There are a couple of rare trade mirrors from this partnership but I don't know of any tokens from the business. This is the same Fred Murphy that later used tokens in his cigar store in Pocatello and Blackfoot. I missed out on the Eagles Club Saloon token from Shelley that was in the auction in conjunction with the NTCA show. I would have liked to have added that one to my Idaho saloon token collection.

I need to thank Jay Burrup who sent me the picture of the Golden Rule Store in Rigby, Idaho. He allowed me to added to last months article about that business.

I've failed so far to get any additional information about the Salt Lake Stamp Co. catalog that I mentioned last month by I'll keep trying.

I've received e-mails over the past few month from some closet Idaho token collectors who enjoy this web site and I appreciate their support. I would like to encourage them to join NTCA(National Token Collectors Association). NTCA publishes a monthly magazine that has some interesting articles about tokens. I especially enjoy Ron Lerch's review each month of the best tokens that were sold on ebay during the previous month. The cost to join is $30.00 per year. If anyone wishes information on how to join I'll be happy to provide it. Just send me an email if your interested.

There were some interesting Idaho tokens that sold on ebay this past month. I was surprised by what some Boise tokens sold for. A token from the "Owyhee Bar/Boise, Idaho" sold for $136.60. A neat "Ballou-Latimer Co./Ltd/Druggists/Boise,/Idaho." sold for $98.85 and a "Big Four/707/Main St./Boise" went for $43.55. A "Canteen Ft. Sherman/Idaho/Good For/15c" sold for $260.00 and a "Wm. Seifert/Shelley,/Idaho sold for $99.00. A cool token from the "Imperial/Cigar Co./ Wallace, Idaho//Good For/6 1/4/cts/in trade" went for $79.87. A maverick token from the "Stag/Cigar/Store/J.G. Oram Prop," sold for $62.00. J.G. Oram ran a cigar store in Rigby and Lorenzo so his token could be attributed to both towns. I didn't realize that there are two varieties of this token until Dale Austin pointed it out to me. There were 5 or 6 other Idaho tokens that I followed on ebay that sold in the $40-50 range.

I made it out once this month to metal detect. I went with Dale Austin to Gilmore, Idaho. We both got skunked which isn't to unusual for Gilmore. The trip convinced me that it is time to get a new knee. I signed up for a total knee replacement in December but I may chicken out!

The best thing I picked up on ebay this month was an advertising plate from Salubria, Idaho. I've detected part of the old townsite of Salubria before with Dan Lute but I've yet to find a Salubria token. They unfortunately are very rare.
