Sept. 2007: Token News
There doesn't seem to be much token news to report on this month. The annual National NTCA Token Show is taking place this Labor Day weekend in Omaha, Neb. I would like to have gone but this always seems to be a busy weekend for me. I don't know of any Idaho collectors who attended except a couple of dealer/collectors. There were some good Idaho tokens in the auction that they have in conjunction with the show. I imagine there were some mail bids submitted by some of you. The weather has finally started to cool down and I know a few more people have been out metal detecting. I haven't heard of any great finds yet. I might mention that I got a new computer and hooked to cable. I can't believe how much faster it works. I also changed internet providers and got a new email address. My new email address is idahoras@gmail.com If I haven't responded to anyones emails lately try using my new address. It seems to be working well. A few good tokens sold on ebay this month. There was a 50c denomination from Walter A. Johnson that sold for $315.00. A $1.00 denomination from the same business was sold on ebay last month. There was a neat Orofino, Idaho token that I hadn't seen before that sold for $170.35. It was from “F.N. Edginton / Orofino, / Ida. // G.F. / 25cts. / I.T.” It was round, brass and measured 24mm. A “William Mathews / Mullan, Idaho // G.F. 25 / cts. / I.T” sold for $53.00 which I though was a good buy. It was round, brass and measured 29mm. Another 5c, scalloped, aluminum token from the”Morning Club / Mullan, / Ida.” sold for $58.95. This was the second one of these to show up in recent months. There were a couple of others tokens that I think deserve mentioning. A round, aluminum “Perkins / Restaurant / Pocatello // 25” in dug condition sold for $57.78 and a maverick from the “Columbia / Cigar Store /138 / No. 1st. /Avenue // G.F. 12 1/2c / I. T.” sold for $76.00. It was round, brass, 21mm and was also dug. I'm not sure if they were both dug in Pocatello or not. If someone knows the attribution of the maverick token I'd like to know. A “Sandpoint Drug Co. Ltd. // 5c In Trade”; round, brass, 21mm sold for $79.77. Another Sandpoint token from the “Tavenac Inn Club” sold for $53.55. It was Good For / 10 / cts. / In Trade and was round, brass and measured 24mm. An unusual couple of plastic “good fors” from Nampa sold for $53.00. The yellow one was “Good For / 5c / In Trade” and the blue one was “Good For / 25c / In Trade”. The obverse said “Nampa / Nick & / Franks / Idaho //. The listing said they measured 1 1/4” which would translate into around 32 mm. I spent a couple of hours visiting with Kendall Ballard a few weeks ago. He is doing fine and still enjoys visiting about tokens. He's volunteering 3 hours a day at the Deseret Industries store in Rexburg which he enjoys and it gives him something to do. I'm on the trail of a catalog from the Salt Lake Stamp Company and I may have more to report on it next month. It would be neat to find a copy of one that shows some information about tokens.
